This is a bare essential fakebook which lists a lot of the old folk songs. Songs are transposed to easy keys and about the hardest chord I see in the book is a B7, which everybody needs to know anyway. I got it to help ease some junior family members into reading musical notation for the guitar, but found I like it as well. I think that children should learn both tabs and notation; this book has no tabs but you can't have everything. The book has chords, but those should be taught as arpeggios for younger players. ( Guitar is supposed to be fun, not a chore. Chords are why you see so many young guitarists who give up after the first month. You don't see young classical violinists learning chords first.)The songs are so well known and so easy that anyone who is close to being intermediate on the guitar can use them as a basis for addition of runs, flourishes, chords, riffs and whatever you want to do. (I'd just got up from playing its version of "The Streets of Larado", an old Celtic tune, with some additions I'd learned from a hammered dulcimer player in San Antonio 40+/- years ago, when I remembered that I hadn't reviewed the book yet.) Some (actually a lot) of the songs do have oversimplification of some passages (ok, a lot), but that's one of things that pushes a learner over into improvisation, wouldn't you think?
I like the fact that all songs fit on one page or two, so I can sing along just by looking at it (without having to turn pages). Most of the songs (or possibly all) are on youtube, so it is easy to learn the songs. Often, though, lyrics are slightly different, but maybe folk songs have some natural variations. I highly recommend this book if you are trying to pick one.
This was a gift for my daughter who is learning the guitar. I like the songs in this book they seemed good for a beginning guitarist.
I use this book at home to play for fun, and t school to play when I am telling stories about Folk Lore to my K - 3rd grade classes,
This is a good songbook, and I enjoy playing these songs.
