About the Author

Egerton Ryerson Young was a teacher, pastor, author, and a brave missionary to remote Canadian Indians. Young’s mother died in 1842, and consequently he was raised by his stepmother, Maria Farley. After a brief stint as a school teacher, Young was ordained and called to a pastorate of the First Methodist Church in Hamilton. In 1868, however, he was invited to become a missionary to the natives of Rupert’s Land. After praying over this with his new wife, Elizabeth, he asked her what she thought about this call. “I think it is from God and we will go,” was her reply. What happens next is the compelling story of this book.

I found this book an enjoyable read. The writing is admittedly quite sentimental, but once I realized that's just how people wrote back in the 19th Century, I was able to really appreciate the book a whole lot more. I espeically appreciated Rev. Young's accounts of the various dangers he encountered during the various journeys he undertook as part of his missionary responsibilities to bring the Gospel to Canada's First People - some of his adventures were quite amazing and thrilling!I felt another good thing about this book was how he was able to paint a very good picture of what life was like in Canada's prairies during the 19th Century, together with many insights to the culture and lives of various First People tribes. (I believe they're called First People in Canada, since the term "Native Americans" might get them confused with tribes in the United States.) In addition, Rev. Young's deep love and respect for the First People among whom he labored really shines through in his memoirs. The description of the geography and climate of Canada's prairies is also quite informative.Overall, the service that these early missionaries among Canada's First People rendered was quite amazing and even sacrificial. I have much respect for what these men and women accomplished, and the very positive legacy they left behind.

I was surprised to find this interesting and well-written account of taking the Gospel to the Aboriginal peoples of Canada in the late 1800's. It was thrilling to read their testimonies. They were so open and hungry for the good news of Jesus Christ.I would recommend this book for anyone who has a heart for missions. It is 100 percent written with a Christian Biblical perspective, and of course, from the missionary's point of view. I would read more books by this author.(I would be interested in learning more about the recommended lumberjack ministry book, but the link took me to the updated version of The Pursuit of God. Please fix that.)

Great read. If you like books about travel by dog and river in the wild and frozen northland you will also want to read these similar books from that era:1. A Winter Circuit of Our Arctic Coast: A Narrative of a Journey with Dog-sleds Around the Entire Arctic Coast of Alaska (1920)2. By Eskimo Dog-sled and Kayak (1919)3. Peace River: A Canoe Voyage from Hudson's Bay to Pacific by the Late Sir George Simpson ... in 18284. The Wild Northland, Being the Story of a Winter Journey: With Dogs, Across Northern North America (1922)5. Voyages on the Yukon and Its Tributaries: A Narrative of Summer Travel in the Interior of Alaska (1917)6. Journey from Great Bear Lake to Wollaston Land and Recent Explorations along the South and East Coast of Victoria Land (1852)7. Dogs of the American Aborigines (1920)

In reading this excellent book, I found it hard to believe that it was produced around the 1860's era. Mr. and Mrs. Young were missionaries to the Native Americans of Canada. Mr. Young writes: "As my Mission increased in size and new contacts were made, I needed to be on the move nearly all winter to visit those who longed for the Word of Life. Even so, some bands were so remote I could only visit them twice a year. In summer, I went by canoe and in winter by dog train."This statement describes the title of the book, he traveled with his guides, either by water using the homemade canoe or by dog train using a sled. Their hard work among the Native American people is described well. Beautiful to read of the converted who truly received Christ and lived no longer the same. I highly recommend this wonderful historical book about the frontier life as young missionaries to the Indians in Canada.

What a fantastic mission book. The beginning of the book starts a bit odd but soon picks up and takes you into a frozen journey where the flaming gospel prevails to warm the icy heart. This book reads like a novel and is well put together. I learned much of the area, people and work. I will be going back from time to time and using many stories as examples. Interesting, humorous, and spiritually satisfying.

This is a moving, well-written account of a young couple's journey from Ontario, Canada to the interior of that vast, frozen land during the time when the Indians still roamed freely and needed to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. Highly recommend for families to read aloud and discuss, as there were huge differences in the Indian culture and the "modern man" of that day, as well as completely different modes of travel during each season in that cold, harsh country. Beautiful descriptions of the Indians that Mr. Young came to know and work with, as well as accurate accounts of the weather and food conditions of the times. If I could give this 10 stars, I would!

I think this is one of my top ten favorite books. It tells history from a first person view. It is not revisionist. There is a great deal of respect for the Cree Indians but it also tells of their failings. Such as their treatment of the women and the wounded. A great plus is that the author, Egerton Ryerson Young, has a marvelous clear writing style.

The photos were a very nice addition. It is interesting how stilted the language seems. Some scenes could happen today
