Rabbi Rosenberg of SAR Academy in Riverdale (the Bronx/NYC), NY is the author of "Morality for Muggles."He is a leader in engaging students in innovative and creative ways, and leads a Harr yPotter club at his school. There are so many similarities in the Passover Haggadah and the Harry Potter novels, that it is natural to create this fully functional haggadah to engage participants and learn at the seder. I find it engrossing, and cannot wait to use bits of it.The Haggadah itself is structured right to left, with voweled Hebrew in an excellent Hebrew font, facing a very good English translation for the seder. This is NOT a kitschy, gimmickly parody. It is a real Haggadah. Much of the artwork is "vector art" from Vecteezy. The rabbi writes in the introduction that you can find valuable life lessons in both Harry Potter and the Torah, and reading both can give you a deeper understanding. The late Rav Aharon Lichtenstein of Yeshivat Har Etzion called it "reciprocal resonance." Rabbi Rosenberg also includes "Student Voices" in his haggadah... questions to promote learning during the seder. Here are JUST some items you can ingest by using this haggadah at your seder.(1) We begin with the Bedikat Hametz, the "Search for Hametz" (bread, leaven) prior to the holiday.... and isn't the Harry Potter saga a story of a search .. a search for a father figure, a search to deal with the deaths of his parents, the search for Horcruxes... or perhaps the search for the puffery, the yeasty hametz, within each of us (as Dumbledore kept secret from Harry until...).(2) The first of four cups... We raise our glasses in the seder, just as was done in the Globet of Fire. Is it about the wine? about freedom/herut? heroism? sacrific? honor?(3) Is washing the hands without a blessing akin to magic without an incantation? You'll have to read the haggadah to find out(4) Matzah is the Bread of affliction, eaten by rich and poor. How did Harry treat Ron when the candy cart came around and Harry could afford anything, and Ron, eating his humble sandwich, could not?(5) The Four Questions... Why are Remus Lupin and Dumbledore better models for teaching than Snape ,Trelawney, or Umbridge? The Four Types of CHILDREN... Rabbi Rosenberg refers to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (1998) and the different types or varieties of intelligence among Harry, Ron, and Hermione... but also to the daughters of Tzelphchad who were wise in the law and also in their timing. As for the treatment of the Wicked Child in the Haggadah...how does this compare to Harry going back to help Draco Malfoy. As cited by London's Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, the value of Rasha (wicked) is 570. Remove the exterior fangs (teeth, 366), and you are left with 204. 204 is the value of Tzaddik (righteous person).. Wow!... discuss(6) I can go on and on... Moses' staff and Harry's wand.... the plagues.... the Hillel sandwich (Korech).. and how one combined the bitter with the historical experiences to make it easier to swallow (how did Harry bundle the bitter with the more edible)... Chad Gadyah and how Harry Potter turns on a single beginning idea... the power of acronyms (Detzach, adash...) vs S.P.E.W...It makes for a memorable and engaging holiday... and isnt that what we seek? To create and impart lifetime learnings and memories.
Got my copy and just started reading through it. First I have to say how utterly beautiful the book looks. Each page is in full color with clean and attractive illustrations and a great color scheme. I love seeing well-designed self-published books! The book contains all the text, in Hebrew and English, that you would expect to find in a haggadah, along with short bits of commentary relating each part of the seder to a concept in Harry Potter. I particularly enjoyed Rabbi Rosenberg's musings on goblins' ability to perform bittul hametz and the parallels between the four Hogwarts houses and the four children in the seder.Sprinkled throughout are also thought-provoking questions and some short answers provided by Rabbi Rosenberg's students--these are absolutely precious and alternately had me cracking up and pausing to dwell on some truly insightful answers. At the end of the haggadah are six complementary essays on topics important to both Harry Potter and the story of Passover, from "Slavery and Freedom" to "Empathy for Your Enemies." I can't wait to sit down and read these and discuss them with my friends.
I love the concept, and while there are a few stretches in the attempt to make a connection work, it is an excellent addition to my HP and Pesach collections! As a huge HP fan, and the leader of sedarim every other year, I highly recommend this. There are some formatting suggestions I'd make, and there were a few typos, but overall, I loved reading it. It's a full Hagaddah with HP insights between the standard service. This is not for casual readers or move watcher only; I believe true HP readers/fans would get the most out of it.
Hosting Second Seder this year for guests with varying levels of Pesach knowledge, I wanted to provide a collection of Haggadahs that were easy to follow along with but also interesting. The Hogwarts Haggadah is fantastic, between the simple breakdown of the Passover Seder and the Harry Potter parallels, I am sure it is going to be a hit.
Surprisingly serious, halachically sound take on the Haggadah, from the expected "Harry Potter" perspective. Included some useful illustrations/input via questions posed to the writer's students (generally age 9-14). Definitely not appropriate for anyone younger than that. I don't think this should be your #1 go-to Hagaddah, running the whole evening's narrative, but it provides some interesting points for discussion and is well worth including. In fact, certain digressions might well engage an otherwise cynical or tuned-out teenager. If you have Potterphiles in your family, it's worth picking up a copy for next year's seder.
The Hogwarts Haggadah was a hit at our second-night seder. I may have loved it even more than my kids. The essays and commentary are thoughtful and thought-provoking. None of it seemed forced. It honestly helped renew the holiday for me.We didn't get to every page that night, but I am leaving it out so I can read bits of it here and there post-Pesach. I think it's my new favorite-of-all-time Haggadah.
My kids (11 and 13) were so excited that they read it cover to cover when it arrived. That certainly has never happened with a Haggadah in this house.
Wonderful Haggadah. I especially love the "Student Voices" sections that are strategically placed throughout the book. It is a clever and enjoyable way for parents to engage their children in conversation about life and what it means to be Jewish, which is ultimately what the Seder experience is all about.
Very well thought out. A little hokey at times, but all in good fun! I'll have it on every sedar table from now on.
