According to the book, 1 out of 68 children will have some form of autistic spectrum disorder. I was shocked to learn that the disorder was so prevalent. We all need to educate ourselves about the disorder as we or our kids may be called upon to be helpful to the diagnosed child and his parents or other members of his family. I am thankful that IEPs and IFSPs are in place, but also think that our entire society could and should support autistic spectrum disorder children and their families either financially or through helping to educate the community. Also, some of us could provide direct support in some of the countless ways these children and families need help. This book, with its many examples, not only gives us a good explanation of the disorder, but it gives parents terrific information about coping with it.Autism Explained is filled with easy-to-read, useful information on a disorder that has become commonplace in our society. For example, the author tells parents to keep track of all the paperwork from all the team members of the IEP and IfSP. Parents should keep this in an orderly file and take it with them to all appointments about their child. This kind of detailed information will not only be a time-saver, but could actually determine the kind of help the autistic child might receive.Excellent book on the subject. Highly recommended!
Autism Explained, I can easily say I now understand a lot more about autism and the difficulties this would place upon the parents. This has got to be a terribly frustrating position to find oneself in. The book certainly helps you grasp the child's perspective and why they act the way they do. I don't have an autistic child but the advice I think is sound and well researched. A heart wrenching read but I am glad to understand this condition as it gets so much attention. This is another good book by Sara Elliott Price I found impressive. Her writing style is simple, comforting and never difficult to understand.
This is a very well written book on a very sensitive and important topic. The author goes into detail with simple steps to work through to help you understand just exactly what is going on with your child. Communication is key with this disorder, and this book has an entire chapter outlining the best ways to do so. Autism should not be looked at as a road block, it should just be viewed as another way of life. Autistic children deserve the same chances at success as anyone else, and this book explains that well. I would like to thank the author for this book.
After a friend's son receiving an autism diagnosis, I sought out more information on the condition. I think it will help to be better informed so I can at least be better conversation partner with her when the topic comes up. Maybe I'll discover a few things along the way that can help make her family's life a little smoother as they deal with a new set of challenges. This book was a great intro to the condition, explaining not only the 'what' but also the 'how' in terms of starting simple and developing new habits in the care of an autistic child.
A friend of mine has a son with Autism, personally I’ve never met someone with this problem and it was a shock for me so I wanted to learn more about it. At 37 pages this book gives you a short version (which is what I needed) on Autism and offers some advice on how to help those suffering from it and yourself. It also makes me thank the God every day for having two perfectly healthy kids.
Not a bad book, somewhat brief for such an expansive disorder. Not much medical background on Autism, which wasn’t what I was looking for anyway. Was just looking for ideas on what to do with my son on rainy days, and this book was fine for that.
Although I don't have any children with autism I do have friends with children on the autism spectrum. This book gave a lot of great, quick tips to creating a world for the child to feel safe in and to be able to express him/herself. Knowing that there are concrete steps that can be taken to help the child decreases some of the worry a parent has to feel. The author of the book seems very informed and up to date on information as well.
Great book! I learned so much from this book about how to understand and communicate with a child that is autistic. It's very practical, well written and easy to read. This book gave me a lot of insight into the mind of an autistic person and their needs and how to communication with them. Recommend!
