This book is great. It has all the NCBE online practice questions with better explanations. This book is a must for studying for the MBE. However, this shouldn't be the only book. Recently, MBE is moving away from the predictable pool of questions. It looks nothing like these questions anymore. It used to maybe 4 years ago when I used all the NCBE questions and the actual MBE was very similar to these questions. I just took the July 2015 MBE and the questions are super difficult, confusing, weirdly worded and tests you on some really funky concepts I've never seen in this book. This book still helped me for a good 1/3 of the exam though. But be prepared for the future MBE and it's super difficult. NCBE stopped releasing raw scores probably for that reason.
If you order the book new it comes with an access code for Civil Procedure Questions. Well organized and short book. It's designed for you to do approx. 20 pages per day during the last month of your studying. So, if you just did a practice test or the midterm type practice and you need help to really take your score to the next level, this book is for you. If you aren't doing a class or just want to do well on the MBE, this is an ideal book to add to your MBE studying.
I used this along with Barbri for the Indiana bar exam.Spend most of your time prepping for the MBE because it's worth half of the test! I would spend hours pacing around my apartment reciting black letter rules from the Barbri MBE outlines, then do Barbri questions, then work on this book before bed. I had enough time to do all of the questions in this book and most of the Barbri questions. I ended up earning a 150 on my MBE, which is probably high enough to pass any bar exam despite a less-than-perfect performance on the state law essays or MPTs. (Although I still memorized as much of the state law rules as possible via lots of acronyms that I made up).This book gives good tips that Barbri doesn't and the questions help a lot. Get this book!
I'm reviewing this very much in hindsight after taking the July 2014 bar exam because initially I wasn't sure how much it helped my studies. But looking back, Strategies & Tactics was a key supplement to my comprehensive bar course that helped me pass the bar exam the first time, with a very strong MBE score. This book is special because of how it explains the answer choices and it alerts the readers to common pitfalls (one might call them "tricks") often encountered on the MBE. Using Strategies & Tactics helped me identify why I made certain errors and more importantly, how to think more like the NCBEX when selecting an answer. Highly recommended!
Valuable to get the real MBE 200-question test. But the layout is wacky -- seemingly just to save a few inches of white space? (Of which there is none.) Normally not that big a deal but its useful to get into the mindset of where to jot notes, how the pages appear, etc. Also some aspects seemed really b-side -- like the grainy answer sheets that had several misnumbering errors. There also wasn't an analysis of the results of the 200 Q exam (i.e., what average would be; the difficulty of the questions; etc.). Sort of basic, but served the need to test some real Qs.
This is the best MBE preparation book. Use it with Emanuel bar prep flash cards, and be sure to carefully read the author's fine print in the study sections. This is not about practicing massive numbers of test questions. It about practicing with real MBE test questions. Take your practice half test on a Friday and then studying the results. Why did you get the question wrong? The legal wording has nuances of the MBE wording which is finely tuned. Study it, not the fictional MBE questions. Barbri is not on the same level as this book. If you repeat the bar, this will become your new best friend. Good luck!
I used this for a class but it is great has good explanations in the beginning and is very helpful in bar study.
I passed the Michigan bar exam with a 162 in 2013. I used Themis, and this. I spent less than half what most did on bar prep and did great on an exam only 50% of people passed. Emanuel books are worthwhile.
