Finished this book in one day. It's something you can't put down once you start reading it. It's more than a true crime novel, it's a story about relationships, about living through terror and how it affects the people closest to you. It's a book about local and state politics in a time of crisis. It's a book about a community coming together and finding a way forward through tragedy. It's a book about hope and perseverance, and one judge's courage to stand up to a serial killer. If you want to understand how these murders affected a community, a courthouse, a legal system, and a family, you need to read this book.
I inhaled every word of this true story, nail bitter, even though I knew the outcome. The morning of the first murder, I remember where I was...in the middle of Walmart in Seagoville, Kaufman County, Texas, when another shopper who was talking on her cell phone burst into tears. I'm a GriefShare facilitator and was concerned and moved toward her. She looked at me and blurted, "Someone just murdered a D.A. near the Courthouse in Kaufman!" And I cried with her. We were terrified. They had no idea who or why? And we were just several miles from the assassination scene.Even knowing many of the events, Judge Wiley's book kept me glued to every word. And knowing who Judge Wiley is and what she's accomplished, made me very proud of Kaufman County, Texas.I too am a published author and have trouble just reading, especially when I know the plot and outcome...I always find myself editing. Target On My Back made me forget the editing process and read, almost non-stop to find out what really happened leading up to and beyond these heinous crimes. Great read. A must read! It could happen in any-town-USA!
Give it 2 stars for the criminal action, investigation, and trial. Took the other 3 stars away for 2 reasons. I've never seen a more poorly edited book. Multiple instances of words or phrases repeated. Did this book even go thru edit? Also, I was sorely disappointed the author went on so much about her family activities. I'm sure they are important to her, but this was advertised as a true crime book, not a chic flick.
This book is so boring. Let me start by saying that I like reading true crime. This book is not a true crime story. The author who is a Judge and District Attorney should not be writing books, stay with the law. She rambles on and on about nothing. I really don't care that her husband wants to be amorous. The title is A Target on My Back - a prosecutor's terrifying tale of life on a hit list. Her story is not terrifying, just down right boring. I don't like to start a book and not finish so I lumbered through and it did not get any better. Maybe the last 10 to 15 pages deal with the murders and subsequent trial. Please do not waste your time or money on this book.
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction! A very compelling read. A judge with a target on her back had some very tough decisions to make. Would she make the right ones? Read to find out how she tried to protect herself and her family and if a killer would be caught.....
Finished it the day it arrived. It was a great read about community, the experience of her family during this time, and how the hard working law enforcement agencies were finally able to catch this killer. Her style was easy to read and I felt like I was just sitting there having a conversation with her. Local residents who followed this tragedy will appreciate reading what it was like to actually live the experience.
This is the driest book EVER. The writing is soooo redundant, that's it's torturous to read. She treats the readers as if they haven't gotten past fifth grade. I recommend this as a cure for insomnia.
Having read the book by Kathryn Casey that detailed the crimes, I already knew than e facts of the case. However, it is interesting to hear how it affected another person. The author shares her story of being a potential victim of this murderer. The book is good and adds to our knowledge
