OH.MY.GOSH, what did I just read?! It has been sooooo long since I’ve read a Wendy Higgins book and this was the BEST point to pick things back up again. I’ve been a fan of mythology since I was kid, I can’t say that I have a plethora of knowledge, but I always loved reading about it. In Soul in Darkness, we have Cupid and Psyche’s story, a very new story to me … I didn’t even know Cupid had his own love story. I just couldn’t get enough of their story and had trouble putting my book down.Since I had zero idea about their story, I had no expectations and was fully ready for the journey this book was going to take me on. I honestly thought this was going to be a YA, but Higgins definitely gives a little note that this is very much an adult read and THANK GOODNESS for that.For Psyche being young and being very new to relationships in general (well she just skips that and has to marry), I found her to be mature about everything. She has so much beauty, but was so humble about everything. She didn’t care about the gifts that people would adorn her with and would give them to those in need. Psyche was a character that surprised me, she’s a strong, daring and a kind-hearted person. Her name means soul, which is very fitting to her personality.She definitely irked me at sometimes with quick to believe what everyone tells her. I very much expected her to ALWAYS listen to her natural instincts, but I’d say it definitely got the best of her at times. She’s not one to tuck tail and hide, so I loved how determined she was.Cupid intrigued me the most! I knew next to nothing about him except for what Valentine’s Day paints him as. He was mysterious and downright alluring, and I was just eager to learn everything about him. Despite everything that she was told about her husband,it was always the exact opposite. Like I’ve mentioned before, he’s nothing like you’d expect.Everyone, I absolutely loved Cupid! He was so kind and endearing to Psyche, willing to give everything he could to her. As much as I loved the unique aspect of their relationship where she couldn’t see him, it definitely frustrated me to no end. I wanted nothing more for her to just see him and it’s seriously such a tease. But I loved every minute of it and you will too!Gosh, I wish I could re-read this book over for the first time. I hope we get more Wendy Higgins mythology retellings because I am there for all of it. Such a beautifully written and intriguing tale where trust is the key.Can’t recommend this book enough!
My Thoughts:Soul in Darkness by Wendy Higgins was a wonderful read. It is the retelling of the love story of Cupid and Psyche. I enjoy Mythology, and Wendy Higgins is one of my favorite authors, so I was excited to buy this ebook and dive right in! This is a one sitting type of read, so I highly suggest not starting it unless you'll have enough time to finish it; because you won't want to put it down.The story takes place on a beautifully breathtaking Island in the Aegean Sea during the Roman Empire. Venus the Goddess of Love blessed Psyche's barren mother with three daughters, because her parents had beautiful souls and were amongst her most devoted of followers. However, after they have their youngest daughter, beautiful and flawless princess Psyche, they forget all about Venus.Everyone on the island and even people from afar adore Psyche. She is as beautiful and pure as a soul can be. Pretty soon, people are sending offerings and an abundance of gifts, but the Princess just donates them to the poor. She is humble, kind, and unassuming. Venus becomes jealous, enraged, and wants revenge on Psyche, and enlists the help of her son Cupid.What follows is a very beautiful and erotic love story, full of plot twists and surprises. Soul in Darkness had a fairytale feel, and reminded me of Beauty and the Beast. Psyche reminded me of "Belle," in the way she was kind, beautiful, and willing to sacrifice herself for her family. Cupid reminded me of the "Beast," in the way that everything was not as it appeared.If you enjoy mythology, fairytales, and a great erotic romance, Soul in Darkness is an excellent choice for your next read.
I’ve always been intrigued by the legendary story of Psyche and Cupid, but wished for a different ending. In this retelling, the story is much more detailed with two likable main characters, adventures, sacrifice and of course love, and I am happy with where this one ended. Cupid’s tale is just in time for Valentine’s Day.
This is the best book of 2019!!!! Hell, the best book probably of the decade!!! Wendy Higgins is an incredible writer but she has truly outdone herself! I couldn't put this book down, I read through the night and now I miss Psyche and Cupid so much it hurts!!!! Such a beautiful story, I'll cherish it forever!
This is my new favorite book by Wendy. It was well written, it held my attention the entire time (I never lost interest), and the story was so unique and interesting. I dont like to say a lot in my reviews in regards to recapping the sypnosis or posting potential spoilers but if you love Greek mythology, romance and happy endings- I highly recommend.
She was just.....a whiner. Every time she made a noise- she was screaming or crying. It made it really hard to relate to her.Skip it
I loved this book. I devoured it in one day. The strength of Psyche and cupids love for each other is so powerful. You did so amazing with thier Story. I loved so many moments!!!
